Everyone’s favourite messaging app WhatsApp just got even better with a new live tracking feature that lets you share your locations with your friends in real-time.

It’s a pretty handy tool for those who wish to keep track of their friends’ whereabouts, especially in scenarios when you’re planning a meet up, letting your family members know you’re safe or just sharing your commute.

Using Live Location on WhatsApp is easy: Simply open a chat with an individual or group, tap “attach”, choose “location”, and select “share live location”.

You can also set the amount of time you want to share your location with your friends, either 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours.

Once you’ve shared your location, your friends can then see where you are on a map in real-time. What’s even more cool is that you can have multiple people share their location in a group chat and they will all be visible on the same map.

If you’re concerned about privacy, WhatsApp said Live Location is end-to-end encrypted so only you and the people in your chat can view your location.

Keep in mind that Live Location will not work if your phone is set to battery saving mode or if you don’t set your Location in your phone setting to Always On.

WhatsApp isn’t the first to roll out this feature. Only recently, SnapChat introduced Snap Map that lets its users find other people on the app, while the iPhone also has a similar “share my location” feature for quite some time.

The Facebook-owned messaging app is also rolling out another useful feature this month that lets users recall texts that are sent to friends or groups by mistake. Users will be able to remove those texts up to seven minutes after they are sent.

Back in July, the app received a major update that enables sharing virtually all types of files up to 100MB, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint files, MP3s and Android APK installers.

WhatsApp is one of the world’s most popular mobile messaging application with a billion daily active users.
