Japan is well known for being a high tech nation and its unique otaku culture, but now there’s another reason to visit the land of the rising sun in the next few years.
The world’s first theme park based on a popular videogame franchise is set to open there in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
That new attraction is Super Nintendo World, and it is being constructed at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. The new park will bring popular Nintendo game characters like Mario and game worlds like Mushroom Kingdom to life.
When completed, Super Nintendo World will have video game-style levels and feature rides based on Nintendo’s popular video games, including a Mario Kart experience.
The Nintendo-themed park will also have its own retail and restaurants.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Super Nintendo World was held at Universal Studios Japan yesterday, during which the park operator said that the new park will be the most immersive and cutting edge technological attraction ever built.
The project is estimated to cost about US$350 million.
