Huawei builds a better Macbook

One of the biggest news coming out of WWDC this week was the hardware refresh announcements for Apple’s Macbooks.

With a faster Intel 7th generation “Kaby Lake” processor on board, and now with a Core i7 configuration, Apple’s 12-inch Macbook suddenly become a little more appealing.

But you’d still have to put up with the single USB Type C port if you’re planning on getting one.

As much as I’m frustrated by Apple’s decision to limit the number of ports in its laptops these days, I actually like the 12-inch Macbook’s design aesthetics. It would’ve been the perfect laptop for me if it had at least an extra USB slot.

Thankfully, there is one laptop that somehow matches the same ultra-sleek design as the Macbook, but is more generous in port options.

Announced days prior to WWDC, the Huawei Matebook X closely resembles the Macbook in a lot of ways – minimalist design, smooth, brushed aluminium body, slim and lightweight. It’s also packed with a lot of muscle, running on Intel’s 7th-gen CPU and starts with a Core i5 for the base model. No slow Core M here!

But Huawei’s new Windows 10-powered laptop has twice the number of USB Type C ports located on each side – the left is for charging and data transfer, while the right supports data transfer and video output via an adapter.

The MateDock 2 adapter comes in the box too, whereas on the Macbook, the accessory is a separate purchase.

Huawei’s included adapter also has more connectivity options than Apple’s proprietary adapter, with support for another USB-C, a standard USB port, VGA and HDMI.

The Matebook X (price to be announced) is a solid option if you want a non-Apple ultrabook that borrows the beautiful aesthetics of the 12-inch Macbook.

Aside from the design and extra port, Huawei’s new laptop has a really good spec sheet:

  • Up to Core i7 U-series CPU
  • 8GB of RAM
  • 512GB SSD
  • About 9 hours of battery life
  • 13-inch 2160 x 1440 screen with 3:2 aspect ratio
  • Thin display bezels
  • Silent, fanless operation
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Dolby Atmos speaker
  • 1-megapixel webcam
  • Windows 10 Pro
