The new BMW 5 Series is a car loaded with tech, and I dare say that it might be the most techie car in town as of today!
QAF Auto Sdn Bhd, the dealer of BMW cars in the sultanate, unveiled the new 5 Series last night at its showroom in Beribi.
The 5 Series has BMW’s latest display key, a remote control with a touchscreen display on it, which will let you park your vehicle, check fuel levels, and pre-setting cabin temperatures – something that’s really handy in Brunei when it gets really hot at lunch hour.
The self-parking is something that we’re eagerly waiting to try out using the remote, along with the semi-autonomous feature.
Now the semi-autonomous feature is not a first on the 5 Series, but it sure is a welcome addition in terms of technology and innovation.
The sensors, stereo camera and ultrasound and radar monitor lets the car take over and this is extremely handy when you’re stuck in a huge jam at 2pm or 6pm on the highway. Get the Active Cruise Control (ACC) on, and it’ll help soothe your right foot.
The 5’s infotainment system has a number of different input methods – you have a standard rotary knob, there’s a new touchscreen, through your voice or by touch, and gesture control from the 7 series!
For example, you can twirl your finger in a circular motion to turn up the volume, or by waving two fingers to perform a call and so on.
The iDrive now displays three tiles at once on its 10.2-inch touchscreen, and tapping on a tile will bring up that particular functionality, or simply use the turn-dial knob.
Speaking of displays, there’s also a heads-up display which is much larger than its predecessors.
QAF’s top-of-the-line 530i M Sport is equipped with a 2.0 litre engine, that produces 252hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. BMW is claiming a 6.2-second 0-100 km/h, but real world tests are already claiming just 6.0 seconds with the help of the eight-speed ZF gearbox.
If you’re looking for big differences in the exterior of the current generation 5 Series and the previous gen, you might be disappointed (sans the crazy DRLs) but BMW has refined the look on the 5 Series this time around and slapped a LOT of tech on it.
Overall, the product is probably the pinnacle of executive business sedans to date with so much refinement.
Although it can’t top my favourite 5 Series, the E34, this definitely comes extremely close.
