If you’ve played the first two StarCraft games and their expansions over the years, then you’ll be delighted to know that Blizzard, the developer of this addictive real-time strategy (RTS) game series, has announced that it is working on remastering the original 1998 classic.

This remastered edition is not exactly a remake of the game, but essentially giving the original game and the Brood War expansion better-looking visuals and refreshed audio, and with the beloved gameplay and balance of the game still intact. Best of all, the game will be playable in 4K resolution.

A lot of big game developers are now banking on nostalgia by remaking or remastering their old gems to attract both new gamers and old fans. And triple-A titles such as StarCraft could easily grab a lot of gamers’ attention.

Thanks to the available technologies today, it’s a lot easier for pretty much any game company to revive their old games with upgraded visuals and revamped gameplay.

Blizzard also announced that it is giving away the original non-HD version of Starcraft for free, so if you’re feeling nostalgic and want to get your hands on the game now, you can download the game on Battle.net. This free non-HD version has been updated to work with modern computers.

But its really the more polished remaster that every fan of the series should be waiting for. The last two games have been phenomenal. The first time I played StarCraft back in 1998, I couldn’t get off my desk for days! And even Goh De No couldn’t get his hands off StarCraft 2 to this day.

StarCraft 1 revolutionised the RTS genre 19 years ago, hitting the level of quality and balance that made it stand out from other RTS games at that time such as Age of Empires and Command & Conquer.

StarCraft: Remastered is scheduled for a middle of 2017 release for PC and Mac. Blizzard has yet to announce pricing for the remastered game.

I do hope that Blizzard could give us a mobile version of StarCraft so we could play it on our smartphones.
